Program Notes

The term “rouge-gorge” is a familiar term used in Francophone communities to designate birds with red feathers around the throat and chest area. In northern New Brunswick, where I live, we use it specifically to refer to the American Robin. While I was trying to find inspiration for this piece, several robins were feasting in my backyard, and their beautiful song just filled the room in such a pretty and fun way. (In fact, I was quite surprised that this music came from these birds that I had discarded as not very attractive and only good at picking up worms that surfaced on the lawn on rainy days!) I used the birdsong to source the basic material for Rouge gorge et jaune bec: I reproduced its pattern and developed the material much like a baroque composer would, but with a chromatic and rhythmic twist, resulting in an energetic little piece of music.
